For Seiza, about a fist's width apart (between your knees) is how I was taught. This gives a decent amount of stability.

What do you mean by "reasonably"?

I can't sit for long periods if they're touching or close to touching, but if I have a few inches of space between them, I've no issue sitting for a longer time.

Well, my thighs are touching. That places a physical limit on how close my knees can be.

I have the same problem due to general thicccness

There's a very particular and very symmetrical point that feels "right" to me so I always aim for that. I've noticed when I'm doing it correctly my spine feels very unobstructed

What should a male do with his genitals while in this asana? Typically, my knees and thighs are both touching, with the meat of the thighs pressed together ever so slightly so that the knees can touch, and the genitals are sort of lightly clamped beneath the thighs. When I need to use a pillow though, that typically keeps the knees slightly spread and lifts the genitals between the thighs. I’m not seeing anything that seems a reliable resource on this matter. Does anyone have a definitive answer on where the genitals should be placed, with and without the pillow?

If using a pillow is stable and reasonably comfortable, then that might be the way to go, at least for now.

I've become better at meditating but I still get overwhelmed with a sort of distemper which starts with a feeling of energy in my spine and manifests as emotional states and sometimes visual hallucinations

It helps to use droning ambient music but that's a dumb crutch that doesn't actually get you to the proper state

I've found that it's much easier for me over time, but it's much more difficult when I feel like I have to be somewhere or do something... it's challenging.
